P.E.I. will provide funding to save a high school pregnancy prevention program, the province's education minister said Friday.
'It's a valuable program.'— Gerard Greenan, education minister
On Thursday the Department of Education told CBC News it needed a written request before it would consider funding the Baby Think it Over program. But Education Minister Gerard Greenan said his deputy met Friday with the province's school boards.
"It's a valuable program. We will see what comes out of today's meeting with the superintendents, and hopefully we'll be able to make plans for its future use next year and the years ahead," said Greenan.
The program was run for 10 years by the Lake of Shining Waters IODE in Charlottetown. Students would take home special dolls programmed to behave like real babies, including crying in the middle of the night.
The IODE had handed the dolls over to the principal of Morell High School, along with $500 to keep the program running until the end of year. Annual operating costs are about $2,000 a year, and the province had been hesitating.
