A high school principal is asking P.E.I.'s Department of Education to reconsider funding for a teen pregnancy program that uses simulated baby dolls.
'It is a big part of the education program.'— Morell High principal Walter MacEwan
The "Baby Think It Over" dolls simulate baby behaviour such as waking up and crying in the middle of the night. They require cuddling and other care, and record how they've been treated by the teens who take them home to experience what having a baby might be like.
The program had been funded and operated by the Lake of Shining Waters IODE, but ended a month ago. Since that time Morell High principal Walter MacEwen has taken over, with the help of $500 from the IODE.
MacEwan told CBC News Thursday the program needs about $2,000 for maintenance of the 21 infant simulators. He said he spoke with two co-ordinators from the Department of Education about getting funding.
"Neither of them were prepared to put anything in their budget for this," he said.
"I wasn't terribly impressed, because it is a big part of the education program. We try to do a good job, I kind of thought that there should be some money there."
The Department of Education said it hasn't received a formal request from Morell about funding for the program.
