Delta Airlines has announced a direct Charlottetown-New York flight this summer, just days after it confirmed it would resume summer flights to Boston.
The New York service will run on Saturdays and Sundays, starting June 13.
"New York has always been a target market for us," said Charlottetown Airport CEO Doug Newson.
"We weren't optimistic that we would have new service for this summer, because we hadn't heard anything to date. But we had been keeping in touch with all the airlines, hoping that someone would step up and serve New York. So it kind of came late in the season for this summer but we're certainly pleased with it nonetheless."
Newson said in addition to helping with American tourism, the New York flight provides a lot of connections for international travellers who want to travel to P.E.I., as well as for Islanders looking to travel anywhere in the world.
The service will run until Sept. 7 and will be reassessed next year.
Delta Airlines announced last week it would resume its daily flight to Boston this summer.
Newson said extra airport staff likely won't be needed for the two flights, but security may have to be beefed up.
