A Prince Edward Island program that placed infant simulators with teenage girls to convince them early motherhood was not a good idea was shut down last week because it can't find a home.
Marlene Bryenton created the program 10 years ago with the help of the Lake of Shining Waters IODE, which raised the money to buy and maintain the 40 infant simulators. But the chapter can longer find anyone willing to store the "Baby Think It Over" dolls.
"The storage was definitely the main problem. We wanted it to carry on, but we just felt that we couldn't do it any more," said Bryenton.
The life-like dolls are programmed to cry if they don't receive proper care, including late-night rocking sessions.
The dolls are currently being housed by Morell Regional High school. Principal Walter MacEwen said the school took in the infant simulators because he was concerned about what would happen to them.
The program has been valuable to Morell and all other Island schools, said MacEwen, but it would take about $2,000 to keep the program going and the Department of Education will not fund it.
The issue will be discussed at a meeting of Island school principals later this month.
