A contaminant at a construction waste disposal site in Hazelbrook, P.E.I., was leaking or about to leak into the environment, says the order closing it down.

The order issued by Environment Minister George Webster on Friday also cites the operators for dumping waste within 30 metres of the nearest property boundary.

Webster would not go into details of why the dump was shut down when contacted by CBC News, but the information was contained in the order. It did not reveal what the contaminant was.

Neighbours have been complaining about the odour coming from the site, which owner Richard McGuigan said is from rotting drywall.

The province is continuing to investigate, and Webster said the site would stay closed until the issues are dealt with.

McGuigan said he's consulting with his lawyers.
