Unless there is financial assistance forthcoming from the P.E.I. government or Ottawa, people living in Cornwall will have to wait a while for a transit system.
'Everyone around the table thinks that public transit is important.'— Mayor Patrick MacFadyen
Town council voted Wednesday night not to go ahead with a transit system for the next fiscal year. Mayor Patrick MacFadyen said council wants to hold the line on taxes.
"At this time our community is really starting to grow," said MacFadyen.
Council is making low taxes a priority in order to attract people into new subdivisions, he said.
"We felt that that investment right now is more important than investing in public transit. Everyone around the table thinks that public transit is important and it would be a great asset to the town. It's the cost that's really prohibitive right now," he said.
A bus system would cost as much as $150,000 a year, MacFadyen said, $40 to $50 more in taxes for each household. He's hoping the town will eventually have a transit system, but can't say when.
