Power was down across Prince Edward Island for a time Wednesday morning after a farmer ran a piece of equipment into a power line.

The accident caused a short circuit that cut power across the Island. The farmer was not injured.

Maritime Electric crews were at the site of the accident on the Searletown Road near Albany. It occurred near the foot of the Confederation Bridge, not far from where cables carry most of P.E.I.'s electricity supply from the mainland.

The outage began at 10:27 a.m. AT. Power was restored in Charlottetown before 11 a.m., and shortly after noon power was restored to two-thirds of the Island. The utility expected to have all power restored by 1 p.m.

Power had to be restored to one section of the grid at a time in order to avoid overloading any systems.
