A 23-year-old Charlottetown woman pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges she sexually exploited a 15-year-old girl she used to coach soccer.
P.E.I. Provincial Court heard that Jillian Maureen Anderson met the girl two years ago.
In a videotaped interview with police played in court Tuesday, the girl said she and Anderson were just very close friends and never did anything more then hold hands when Anderson was her coach.
But the girl said her parents got upset when they found and read two dozen e-mails between Anderson and her.
The P.E.I. Soccer Association and Charlottetown police investigated, but decided not to lay charges against Anderson.
The girl told police her parents disconnected the internet in her home and told her to stay away from Anderson. But she continued to have contact with Anderson from school and her grandparents' house.
In the videotaped interview played in court, the girl told police Anderson's lawyer served her with legal papers ordering her to stop contacting Anderson.
But six months later, the girl said, they were back in touch and their relationship evolved from friendship to a sexual relationship. It lasted several months and took place, the girl said, mainly at a house where she was babysitting.
Anderson's lawyer will have an opportunity to present her defence later in the trial. The trial is expected to last five days.
