Charlottetown city council is asking the province to double fines for people caught speeding in school zones.

"We will need some co-operation from the provincial government," Coun. Rob Lantz told CBC News Wednesday.

"They'll have to look at the issue themselves because my understanding is that if they create or amend the legislation it will affect school zones in any municipality or any area of the Island."

Lantz is asking Islanders to write their MLAs to show support for this motion.

Council also voted to ask the province to approve the use of photo radar.
