Derreck Dean Huggan of Charlottetown was sentenced to 6½ years in jail in provincial court Tuesday on several counts of conspiracy to traffic in illegal drugs.
The drugs involved were cocaine, hashish, ecstasy and the painkiller hydromorphone. Crown attorney Erin Mitchell predicted the sentence would serve as a deterrent to others.
"We needed to send the right message, I guess, to others in the community considering getting into this type of activity: that it's not going to be condoned, that it's serious, and it has serious consequences," said Mitchell.
Huggan, 42, has already served one year in custody, which will be included in the sentence handed down Tuesday. Added together, Huggan's convictions could have led to more than 20 years in prison, but the court accepted a joint submission by the Crown and defence that the sentences run concurrently.
Huggan was arrested in November 2006 as part of a police operation that involved arrests in Charlottetown and Halifax.
Huggan was the manager of the Route 81 shop in Charlottetown, which has connections to the Hell's Angels, and was shut down following a police raid in May of 2006.
