The RCMP arrested six people in central P.E.I. early Thursday morning, alleging they were connected with a ring that supplied illegal drugs across the province.

Police searched seven residences in Charlottetown, Covehead and St. Charles. They said the drugs involved in the investigation include cocaine, ecstasy, marijuana and prescription pills.

"The investigation targeted persons whom we suspected of supplying other street traffickers in our communities, so this wasn't targeted at street-level drug traffickers," RCMP Cpl. Reg Campbell told CBC News.

"The evidence is still being analyzed at this time, but I can tell you there is a quantity of cocaine, firearms, and money."

RCMP said the investigation began early this year. In addition to the P.E.I. RCMP, Charlottetown police, emergency response teams from New Brunswick and investigators from the RCMP proceeds of crime unit in Moncton were involved in the arrests.

In all, 50 officers were involved in the raids.

Police believe the arrests will have an immediate effect on illegal drug supplies in Island communities. The six face charges of drug trafficking and possession of the proceeds of crime.
