Special deodorant sprays, with fragrances of vanilla, creamsicle and blackberry, are being used to mask odours at Charlottetown's sewage plant until a permanent solution can be found.
The sprays mask foul odours that have been coming from the plant since March. The problem started following an upgrade at the plant, and an unexpected request from the province that the plant process sludge from sources outside the city.
The stink has blanketed the eastern part of the city, and at times drifted across the harbour to Stratford.
The utility is trying to figure what sort of equipment to install to get rid of the smell completely.
Until then the air freshener is being used. The permanent fix is expected to be expensive, but the air freshener has cost only about $200 so far.
