Another request-for-refunds scam is costing some tourism operators on P.E.I. big money.

The latest scam involves someone making a booking under a fictitious name, and sending a fake cheque or stolen credit card number. The person then tries to downgrade or cancel the booking, and asks for a full or partial refund to be wired back before the cheque has cleared.

"They're often looking at having you book maybe more nights than what would be a normal request," Judy MacDonald, president of the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I. told CBC News Thursday. MacDonald also operates the Barachois Inn in Rustico.

"I often find that sometimes like 10 nights for 10 people."

Police say if the refund is sent it is almost impossible to recover, and some operators have been taken for thousands of dollars.

The scam is similar to one reported in January. In that scam, a cheque for a booking arrives with a value higher than what was agreed upon, and a refund is requested.
