There was nothing in Monday's federal budget for the majority of senior citizens on Prince Edward Island, says the P.E.I. Senior Citizens' Federation.

The budget saw changes to RRSP rules and taxation for seniors, but the federation says that will do nothing for the 52 per cent of Island seniors who live below the poverty line.

"There's seniors who can't afford their drugs, the high costs of heating their homes," Eric Hammill, a member of the federation's executive, told CBC News Tuesday.

"There's nothing in that budget at all for low-income seniors."

Hammill said the seniors federation will start lobbying the province to access some of the new money coming P.E.I.'s way in federal transfer payments.

"I think now our only hope is transfers coming from Ottawa in the social development envelope. Maybe we'll find something there to help seniors," he said.
