Hotel, motel and cottage owners need to take care dealing with people booking long stays via e-mail, says the Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I.

'Don't send any money back, no matter what.'— Don Cudmore, Tourism Industry Association of P.E.I.

Executive director Don Cudmore says he's heard from at least 10 operators on the Island who have received requests from people in the U.K. who want to book rooms for three or four weeks. They agree to a price, but then a cheque for a much higher amount arrives.

Then another e-mail arrives, saying the travel agent sent too much money on their behalf and asking that the difference be refunded.

"If you receive a cheque for more than the balance of your accommodations, make sure you cash that cheque and get the money in the bank and that it is legitimate," said Cudmore.

"Don't send any money back, no matter what. Those mistakes just don't happen from travel agents."

Cudmore said as far as he knows, no one has yet fallen for the scam.
