A West Prince man charged with abandoning a child and criminal negligence after allegedly putting a 10-month-old in a freezer has had his case delayed as the Crown looks at more charges.

Derrick Leigh Hardy, 21, appeared in provincial court in Summerside Wednesday morning. He was expected to enter a plea, but the Crown asked for a delay because it plans to enter more charges.

Hardy's lawyer said he wanted the case to proceed immediately, but the judge said he didn't see a reason to do that when more charges are coming.

The charges stem from a complaint last May that a 10-month-old baby was placed in the freezer compartment of a refrigerator.

Hardy was accompanied into court by two police officers because during an appearance last week he was heckled as he left the courtroom.

He will return to court Oct. 11.
