Michael Mayne will be the senior research officer at the new National Research Council Institute for Nutrisciences and Health.

The Institute is being built on the campus of UPEI, and governments have committed more than $30 million in capital and operating costs. The federal government, through the NRC and ACOA, is contributing $28 million to the project, and the province is contributing a further $3.5 million.

Mayne will design and direct the research program and be responsible for recruiting. He will also continue his own professional research on the study of neuro-inflammation occurring in diseases such as multiple sclerosis and Alzheimer's.

Mayne joins the Institute from the University of Manitoba where he was assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutics. He was also principal investigator in the Division of Neuroscience Research at St. Boniface Hospital Research Centre.

Mayne is an Island native who earned his undergraduate degree at UPEI.

The Institute is due to open late 2005.
