Superior Propane has admitted it overcharged some customers on deliveries made at the end of January.

The Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission is asking Islanders to check their oil and propane bills to make sure they're not being overcharged.

The reminder comes after Superior Propane charged 53 customers more than the allowable maximum price set by the Island Regulatory and Appeals Commission. The deliveries that took place Jan. 30 and 31. 

The company blames "human error," and says all affected customers have now been credited.

Allison MacEwen, director of regulatory services for IRAC, said it's up to consumers to keep a sharp eye on their bills.

"I suppose there's a certain responsibility on all of us as consumers to check the bills that we get whether it be a bill from the grocery store or an electricity bill or what have you," said MacEwen.

"In this case it turned out there was a human error and it was corrected immediately."

MacEwen said while there are spot checks to make sure gas stations charge the right prices, that doesn't happen with fuel oil or propane.

IRAC is awaiting documentation from Superior to confirm all the customers were paid back.
