Sobeys is rebranding a number of Co-op grocery stores and gas stations it recently purchased in Atlantic Canada.

As part of a deal that saw Co-op Atlantic sell its grocery distribution system to Sobeys, the national grocery chain also picked up five corporately-owned grocery stores and five gas bars.

The former Co-op grocery stores will mostly become Foodland stores.

  • Quispamsis, NB Foodland
  • Sackville, NB Foodland
  • Milford, NS Foodland
  • Walker Drive, Charlottetown, PEI Foodland
  • North Rustico, PEI Clover Farm

The gas stations will mostly be converted to Shell.

  • Glace Bay, NS Shell
  • Wilbur Street, Moncton, NB Shell
  • Corner Brook, NL Shell
  • Quispamsis, NB Fast Fuel
  • Walker Drive, Charlottetown, PEI Shell

Sobeys says it has completed deals to be the wholesale supplier to all but two of 49 member-owned Co-op locations and is close to finalizing long-term supply or franchise agreements with them.

Co-op Atlantic still owns four stores that were not included in the Sobeys deal, including one in Charlottetown.

Company spokesman Mike Randall said now that the Sobeys deal is complete Co-op will review the operation of the remaining stores. Randall said that review should be completed quickly, with the fate of those stores decided by early next week.
