Queens District RCMP and provincial officials were spot checking snowmobilers on the Confederation Trail Friday night.

One equipment ticket was handed out and a seven-day suspension, said RCMP in a written statement.

Police are reminding snowmobilers that riding while intoxicated carries the same penalties as drinking and driving.

"Snowmobiling is a great way to enjoy the many trails throughout Prince Edward Island during the winter but it is very important that all operators follow proper operating regulations to ensure the safety and enjoyment of all riders as well as the general public," said RCMP in the statement.

Snowmobilers must have a permit to be on the trails or they risk a $500 fine.
