The snow removal budget for the city of Summerside has increased for this coming winter by more than 40 per cent.
The move is designed to address a number of concerns in recent years from people living in some of the outlying areas of the city.
Bruce MacDougall, deputy mayor and a councillor who represents one of the affected areas, said snow removal has been a problem for a while.
"This is not just something that you got one or two calls about. This has been an issue of mine and other outlying councillors for a number of years," he said.
Major snow storms have meant a slowdown in how long it takes to clear roads in some areas, MacDougall said.
"So we decided to put on an extra plow this year, and it's going to cost a little more money but it is going to bring the service level up too."
The extra cost to the city is about $50,000 a year.
