Provincial plows are back out on P.E.I. highways Thursday, further adding to budget overruns that have already hit $700,000.
It is not just the number of storms that have forced to Department of Transportation to overspend its $15 million snow removal budget. Many of those storms have been on the weekend, meaning overtime pay for crews.
The rising cost of fuel has added to the problem.
Sand also had to be replenished earlier than usual because of a series of storms in December.
The Island government handles snow removal, sanding, and salting on a 4,400-kilometre provincial highway system.
