P.E.I. needs to develop a new strategy for dealing with cancer, says the Canadian Cancer Society.
The latest statistics from the Cancer Society show Island men have the highest rate of cancer in the country, while Island women have the highest mortality rate.
A cancer control strategy was developed by the Pat Binns government back in 2004, but Lori Barker of the Canadian Cancer Society said as far as she's aware that plan was never fully implemented. Barker said the province needs a new approach.
"I think that the province needs a very focused strategy, because without a doubt we are facing some very scary statistics for people who are living on this Island," she said.
"Action needs to be taken and a very strong strategy needs to be in place to address this."
Barker said the Cancer Society has already been meeting with the province to discuss the topic. Once a new cancer control strategy is developed, she said it will need government commitment and sufficient financing to carry it through.
