Ground has broken on a new Red Cross Disaster Operations Centre in Charlottetown.

Prince Edward Island is getting a new provincial headquarters for the Canadian Red Cross.

A groundbreaking ceremony was held Friday at the site of the new Disaster Operations Centre in Charlottetown.

Ottawa contributed $350,000, the province gave $300,000 and the Red Cross raised $400,000 through corporate and individual donations.

For more than 70 years, the Canadian Red Cross in P.E.I. has been headquartered in a Victorian-era, three-storey house on Prince Street in Charlottetown.
