An eastern P.E.I. man is facing a number of charges after an incident early Sunday morning, including assaulting a police officer, according to the RCMP.

The 23-year-old Souris man has been remanded in custody.

RCMP say two members of Kings district detachment were assaulted. They were responding to a complaint of a disturbance at a Souris business at 2:15 am Sunday.  Police said both officers sustained minor injuries that did not require medical treatment.

According to the news release, the man was restrained and placed in a police vehicle with the assistance of an off-duty Halifax Regional Police officer and two men who were passing by and stopped to assist.

The Souris man faces two charges of resisting arrest, a charge of causing a disturbance, two charges of assaulting a police officer, two charges of uttering threats to damage property, and two charges of uttering threats to the officers involved.

RCMP say charges of assaulting a police officer are relatively rare on P.E.I.

The man is scheduled to appear in court in Charlottetown Tuesday.
