Backyard pool sales brisk on P.E.I.

Several pool and hot tub companies on P.E.I. say business is booming.

The general manager of Island Hot Tubs and Pools in Charlottetown and Summerside, Rose MacDonald, said the company saw record sales last year and this season is trending the same.

MacDonald said demand is not only fuelled by the humid weather but also by a desire to invest in an escape at home.

"We are finding that more and more people are making their backyard an oasis," said MacDonald.

"They are travelling less and they are putting more of their dollars into outdoor living. So we have had a tremendous increase in pools and spas especially hot tubs. Just sales have generally increased over the last three years."

Officials with Wood's Swimming Pools and Spas said they have also seen a dramatic increase in sales in the last three years.

And so has Virginia Weir, part owner of Live For Today Pools and Spas.

"Instead of trekking off to beaches and cottages and campgrounds, they want to enjoy these homes that they are building and adding the pool," said Weir.

"The last two or three seasons have been the best yet for us as well."

Weir said pools are loved by all ages, but she said they seem particularly popular with young couples with children.
