Charlottetown police are warning people about a rental scam.
They claim fraudsters are posing as landlords on web sites such as craigslist or Kijiji. Police report the fraudsters then say they are out of the country and need a deposit on the rental apartment.
Once the money is paid, usually through a money transfer, the new tenant discovers there isn't actually a rental property available, and their money is lost.
Police note people should always check out in person any rentals being considered and should Google the contact email or the telephone number.
Police said rental rates in the same area should be checked out. They said often fraudsters will try to entice their victims with unbelievably low prices to elicit multiple victims.
