Windy weather and more ice than usual in the Northumberland Strait has led the ferry service between Nova Scotia and P.E.I. to close for the season early.

Tuesday marks the last day of service for the season. The final crossing will be from Wood Islands at 4:30 p.m.

The service was supposed to continue until Dec. 20, but high winds this month have prompted a number of cancellations.

The decision to stop early was prompted by bad weather in the forecast and generally low temperatures that have led to a buildup of ice in the Northumberland Strait.
