New town proposed for West Prince
The P.E.I. government has received a petition for the creation of a new town in the western part of the province.
It would be called the Town of Central West Prince and would incorporate most of the area between O'Leary and Alberton. It would be the largest municipality in the West Prince area and the third largest town in the province.
"This is still a preliminary concept," said Samantha Murphy, manager of municipal affairs with the province.
"It is not a community proposing this, it's individuals, and so we need to know whether or not there is interest from anyone else."
The proposal covers quite a large area, said Murphy, and includes some details of the kinds of services the town would offer.
"Including, I believe, having an office for the municipality, having an administrator in planning services, some recreation, especially in the summer," she said.
A public open house and meeting on the proposal are planned for June 5 at the Rodd Mill River Resort. Residents will be briefed by those putting the proposal forward and by the province. They'll also be asked to answer a survey on the plan.
Provincial legislation requires a petition of at least 25 residents for a proposal to create a municipality. The applicants for the Town of Central West Prince submitted a petition with more than 100 signatures.
The Department of Municipal Affairs has put the details of the proposal up on its web site and welcomes input on the plan.
