New mental health hospital needed, says minister
Health Minister Doug Currie says it is time to replace Hillsborough Hospital, P.E.I.'s central mental health hospital.
Currie said the 75-bed facility is too old and does not meet the needs of current health care delivery.
"There's parts of Hillsborough Hospital that are over 100 years of age," said Currie.
"I think that Hillsborough Hospital has served Islanders well over the years, but facilities have a life span and no one would argue with me that it does need to be replaced."
Currie said discussions about replacing Hillsborough Hospital are in the preliminary stages. Central to any changes, he said, would be improving access to mental health services.
