The new plates will replace all five existing vehicle licence plates in the province with a single new design. The province says government has been hearing from police who are starting to have trouble reading older plates.

The existing plates feature images of windmills, Confederation Bridge, Province House, Anne of Green Gables, or no picture at all. The new plate has a picture of Province House, the Canadian and P.E.I. flags and the words "Birthplace of Confederation."

Vehicle owners will have a year to replace their existing plates at a cost of $5. Anyone who has purchased a licence plate in the last year will receive the new plate at no cost.
