A new centre for youth is set to open in Montague, an idea that emerged following a tragic Charlottetown fire in March in which three teenage boys from Montague died.
At an emotional meeting in April, families and friends met with town council appealing for a place where local youth could gather.
The Montague Wellness Centre has agreed to let youth use the building on Friday nights, says town manager, Andy Daggett, who has been helping a group of youth and parents with the project.
At the centre, youth will be able to play video and other games and also participate in outside activities.
"Just to give the kids somewhere to drop in and have some fun and do everything from learn some life skills. Might bring in some people to teach a little bit of budgeting, some cooking classes, things of that nature," said Daggett.
"We're kicking things off this week. Friday night there will be a teen dance at the Wellness Centre. Just looking to get things underway and give them an option."
The teen dance this Friday kicks off at 8 p.m. and runs until 11 p.m., says Daggett.
He says details are still being worked out, but the tentative plan is to have the youth centre open every Friday night from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m.
