Representatives from minor hockey associations across P.E.I. say they are working to improve the sport for girls.

A steering committee was formed in April to help support, develop and promote girls' hockey on the Island.

Coach Chris Aiken said with registration happening this weekend, promotion is key.

"I think if on the female hockey side of things if we don't get a voice out there and start letting girls know, ‘Hey play this sport. It's great,' we're kind of missing the boat kind of thing because that's what the other sports are doing," he said.

Aiken said he hasn't seen a drop in the number of new girls signing up, but sometimes keeping players is an issue because athletes often play more than one sport.
