Charlottetown's two public pools are about to open for the season but a lifeguard shortage means reduced hours for one of them.

Sue Fraser, who manages parks for the City of Charlottetown, said the city is running short on lifeguards this year.

"We’re running two people short right now. This has never happened to us before. We’ve always had a challenge each spring finding people with the proper certification to take on summer jobs in the lifeguard positions but we certainly have never run into the situation before where we actually had a shortage," she said.

As a result, the Simmons pool won't open until Wednesday. When it does open, there will be reduced hours. The City of Charlottetown's website lists the revised schedule for the pool:

  • 1 p.m. – 4:30 p.m. — Open Swim (daily)
  • 4:45 p.m. – 6:15 p.m. — Lane Swim in the main pool, and Open Swim in the shallow area (daily)
  • 6:30 p.m. – 7:45 p.m. — Open Swim (daily)

The pool at Victoria Park opens Monday. That pool will have regular hours this summer.
