Lennie Gallant wins humanitarian award

Singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant will receive the Canadian Red Cross 2013 Humanitarian award for P.E.I.

Singer-songwriter Lennie Gallant will receive the Canadian Red Cross 2013 Humanitarian award for P.E.I.

The Red Cross says Gallant, who is originally from North Rustico, is being recognized for raising awareness of humanitarian and social justice issues not only through his music but also by becoming directly involved as a volunteer, advocate and donor.

The Red Cross has also announced Jennifer Vessey of York will receive the 2013 Young Humanitarian of the Year for P.E.I.

She is being recognized for her volunteer work with numerous church and school projects. In 2010, she traveled to Ecuador with the "Me to We" organization. Now in university, Vessey is involved with a charitable organization that supports orphaned children and vulnerable women impacted by conflicts and disease in Africa.

Gallant and Vessey will receive their awards Nov. 21 at a dinner at the Delta Convention Centre in Charlottetown.
