RCMP in eastern P.E.I. issued $18,150 worth of fines to people not wearing seatbelts this spring.

That amounted to 66 tickets from April through June, at $275 each.

"During the busy tourist season, the amount of traffic on our highways increases," said Const. Paul Richard in a news release.

"Proper seat belt and child restraint use can help you to avoid traffic tickets, and more importantly, help you and your family stay safe."

RCMP noted air bags are not a substitute for seatbelts. They do not prevent drivers and passengers from being thrown from the car.
