An Island RCMP officer has pleaded guilty to assault.

Staff Sgt. Kenneth Paul Spenceley made a brief court appearance Monday to plead guilty to one count of assault in Charlottetown provincial court.

A charge of breaking a stay away order was dropped.

Spenceley assaulted a man May 23 at a residence in Charlottetown.

Investigators say the two men knew each other and Spenceley was off-duty at the time.

He'll appear in court Aug. 8 for sentencing.

RCMP are conducting an internal investigation.
