The P.E.I. Humane Society has been chosen as a test case for a new, more efficient model of adopting out cats.
The humane society says two-thirds of the animals it helps are cats.
Dr. Kate Hurley from the University of California is the lead on a project called Capacity for Care for Cats. It's a model to help move cats through a shelter more quickly and avoid having to put down as many animals.
P.E.I. was chosen as a test case to adopt this model through the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies.
It says it's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, and it hopes to increase cat adoptions significantly through making some simple changes.
