The P.E.I. hazardous material team was called to the scene of an ammonia leak at a Charlottetown trucking company Thursday.

Charlottetown deputy fire chief Tim Mamye said the department had a call Thursday morning that a 45-kg cylinder of ammonia was leaking in the back of a transport trailer at Diamond's Transfer.

"We just had the area isolated and evacuated, 100 metres in all directions," said Mamye.

"We cordoned it off and coordinated with the Prince Edward Island Firefighter Association Hazmat team. They have the proper suits to wear."

Hazmat team officials were in charge of containing the leak, which Mamye described as small.

The trucking company and a barber shop next door were evacuated.
