Recreational fishing

A Bonshaw group says moving the recreational fishing opening date to a weekend would benefit fishermen and its own opening-day breakfast. (CBC)

The opening day of recreational fishing should be changed, says a volunteer group on P.E.I.

For years, a group in Bonshaw has organized a fishermen's breakfast on opening day, April 15.

But this year, it had to postpone the breakfast until last weekend because there weren't enough volunteers to help during a weekday.

The group says it would be better if the opening was moved to the second weekend in April.

Changing the date wouldn't only be good for the event, but also for fishermen, said Sheldon MacNevin, who organizes the breakfast.

"The real avid fishermen, he wants to be out there that first day and if it's during the week and a working day, he's going to take a day off, so that's a day's wages gone. Also good for young children, school children want to go fishing the first day They don't have to take a day off," said MacNevin.

The province says it has surveyed fishermen in the past and more than 75 per cent of those surveyed didn't want the date changed.

But the province says it is open to discussions.
