Grandmother sentenced for break-in at daughter's

A 51-year-old woman has received six months in jail for breaking into her own daughter's home.

A 51-year-old woman is going to jail for six months after breaking into her own daughter's home.

Irene Burke showed up at the home in Caledonia on New Year's Eve. When her daughter wouldn't let her in, Burke forced her way through a kitchen window and landed on the counter.

Burke then scuffled with her daughter's partner; she grabbed two kitchen knives and threatened to stab him.

When the daughter managed to get the knives, Burke grabbed one of her young grandchildren.

The couple managed to force Burke out of the home and called police.

During sentencing Wednesday, Supreme Court Justice Gordon Campbell described the episode as a home invasion made worse because there were children at home.

In addition to jail time, Campbell ordered Burke spend two years on probation and undergo assessment and counselling.

Burke, whose most recent address is Charlottetown, has previously been in detox 17 times.
