The unemployment rate on P.E.I. rose to 11.3 per cent in May, up from 11.0, despite a drop in the number of people looking for work.

Full-time jobs on P.E.I., 2012

Jan. 60,100
Feb. 60,300
March 58,800
April 60,000
May 58,600

An increase in the number of jobs in April was erased in May, dropping back to the 72,000 reported in March. The news was particularly bad for those seeking full-time work. While the number of part-time jobs actually increased, the number of full-time jobs hit its lowest number this year.

The May numbers continue a spell of unemployment rates of more than 11 per cent that stretches back to the first half of 2010. With the exception of February of this year, the rate has been 11 per cent or higher since July 2010.
