Mr. Chair - Mr. Ghiz - Special guests - Liberal delegates - ladies & gentlemen - Good Evening
To begin, special thanks to Maxine and Peter for an excellent job. Thank you for your kind words and for your support.
Ladies & Gentlemen - tonight my presentation consists of two parts. One is titled Priorities and Policies, and the other is called Liberal Politics.
I hope to be practical yet creative; caring but blunt.
Liberal Delegates: Because of time constraints, I am unable to even briefly discuss my ideas but I want to present to you a listing of priorities and policies that I will pursue vigorously if you elect me as your Candidate.
We have to reduce property taxes for our Seniors - we have to cut them in half, Seniors deserve that much!
If and when Seniors leave their home and seek gov't housing, I want to ensure you that you will not lose title to your home nor will you have to forfeit your personal life savings. As well, you will not lose most of your existing pensions.
Seniors deserve that much!
Seniors are very important to me and the Liberal Party must do more to protect our Seniors.
Our youth need the best education, job training and employment opportunities available.
And, as well, they have to be able to afford car insurance.
Solution: We have to create a provincial auto insurance company - taxpayer owned - and run only on a cost recovery basis.
We will all benefit from this, and young people, especially young men, can finally afford car insurance.
Property taxes have risen over 62% in the last 10 years. We have to immediately cap property taxes, and as soon as possible, roll them back.
We have to remove the ban on canned beer and canned pop.
Waste Watch is a good idea - we have to better manage our garbage -
BUT the Tory way, is the wrong way!!
The fee is too high and I have a big issue with the blue bag system
Your plastic containers, glass bottles, and tin cans are all valuable products.
At the grocery store, you have already paid big money for those containers -
NOW your are giving them away, and worst than that, your are PAYING to give them away!!
I want to put that money back into your pocket!!!
We need better access to, and better delivery of health care. We need to recruit, train, and financially assist more RN's to become Nurse Practitioners. These specialized nurses can diagnose, prescribe, and dramatically reduce hospital and clinic wait times.
We need environmental regulations that make sense.
We need a legal system that the ordinary person can understand and afford.
We need to create a work environment where people do not feel trapped in low-paying jobs.
Gender equity and pay equity programs must be enhanced.
Organized labor; fair wage laws; work place safety. More has to be done here to reflect the modern work- place reality.
We need a provincial strategy for recreational facilities. Small towns must work together. The gov't must be a financial partner - and as a society, recreation exercise, and healthy living, must be given a high priority. Our health and our very lives depend on this.
We must create a trail sstem for out Islanders who enjoy recreational driving of all-terrain-vehicles. We "must" provide a safe environment, where Islanders can safely enjoy this activity, which is growing in popularity.
The village of Morell needs Access PEI back..
The Village of Mt. Stewart should have a snow plow in the village
Along with other paving priorities we need to immediately pave the road from the St. Lawrence cemetery to Head of Hillsborough.
If we have taxpayer - owned golf courses, we need to make them affordable for the ordinary taxpayer
Island tourism must be made more affordable, and we must be promoted as a family destination, and not just a place for the high-rollers.
We need more respect for the taxpayers money
We need to correct a 10 year imbalance, where the Tories had it all and the Liberals had nothing!!!
My last comment leads me naturally into my final remarks.
Ladies and Gentlemen.. Liberal delegates
I am proud to be a Liberal - I am proud to be an Island born, life-long Liberal -
And I am proud to say that I have never cast a Tory vote and that I will never cast a Tory vote. Voting delegates should be aware of those credentials.
Tonight I see before me a big Liberal family, and I ask, how does any family stay together - and stay strong.
We help out each other - we support each other - we take care of each other.
We take care of our family, and we have to take care of our Liberal Family.
Over the past few weeks, Liberals have asked me many questions, But one key question stands out - and the question is this -
If you get in and the gov't changes, WHAT WILL REALLY CHANGE??
My answer was "EVERYTHING" !! "Everything Changes"
And I know why the question was asked - and here is why.
Many Tories out there say, and they say it so smugly, that everything is all locked up. WELL, if I was a Tory I would not rest so easily.
I say, Tories, here is the reality of political power and here is the reality of political change.
When people vote for a change in Gov't, They want to see a change in how this province is run, and a change in WHO runs this province!!
If I, as your candidate, cannot commit to a change here tonight, I should stay home. If a new Liberal Gov't cannot commit to a change, WHY, do we even bother to fight an election??
To accept the status quo?? - I don't like the status quo!!
I want to change the way things are. We need to change how this province is run, and we need to change who runs this province.
IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!
BUT, Ladies and Gentlemen, there is a "psychology thing" out there among Liberals, that we have to get past..
What we have to do as a Liberal Family - is to convince Liberals and Liberal supporters, that change is on the way
What Liberals and Liberal supporters want to know is this!!
Are there Liberal Candidates out there who have the heart - and the soul- and the stomach - to do what has to be done??
Are there Liberal Candidates out there who have the GUTS to say in public - what has to be said??
And what has to be done - and what has to be said??
Well, I will answer for myself!!
I believe in good gov't - I believe in sound public policy.
I listed off 23 ideas for you earlier - and I have 123 more..
But, as well, I am a Liberal first and foremost, and I say to all of you here tonight,
That I will ALWAYS put Liberals first - I will put Liberals at the front of the line
I will put Liberals at the top of the list.
People who support me here tonight, are the people that I will support tomorrow, and support next week, and support next year.
I will take care of my Liberal familyâ¦.
That's where I come from!! That's what I am about!!
I am not going to apologize for being a Liberal.
And I am not going to apologize for saying that I WILL put Liberals first
TORIES, should not rest easy!!!! Fat Cat - well heeled Tories should not rest easy.
The Supreme Court of this province declared recently that all those Liberal firings 10 years ago, were illegal - and that they contravened the Human Rights act
Now, I am not going to suggest that we fire every Tory in sight.. ..
THAT would be stupid!! And it might get me in trouble!!!!
When we change things - we will do it legally, smartly
And, what I am saying is that, in reorganizing gov't many jobs will end-
They will be declared surplus - competitions will be held - job tenders will be required.
A pool of applicants will be created - and Liberals will have a fair chance!!
The Tory monopoly will be broken - and Liberals will have a fair change!!
That is the reality of Political Power - That is the reality of Politics!!
And Liberal have to hear that - clearly - and loudly - and proudly
Tonights voting delegates have to know that
I AM a candidate who has the HEART and the SOUL and the STOMACH
To do - what has to be done..
I support Seniors, our Youth, women, and the working class - I support THE UNDERDOG
And I will always support people who support me!!
Voting Delegates - Your decision tonight is not a complicated one-
-Choose the candidate who has a solid background in public policy - and public service
-Choose the candidate who is an Island-born, life long Liberal -
-Choose the candidate who is a proud Liberal - and who will put Liberals first, who will put YOU first!!
If you write my name on your ballot - if you support me here tonight-
I WILL support you tomorrow!!!!!!!!
IT'S AS SIMPLE AS THAT!!
