Charlottetown's food bank wants to set the record straight on donations of fresh food.

Food bank manager Mike MacDonald wants Islanders to know fresh food donations are welcome.

"I think everybody would rather fresh produce than canned vegetables or canned fruit," said MacDonald.

"Everybody, I think, is becoming a little bit more health conscious and that includes the people that are coming to the food bank. So, you know, everybody wants the fresh produce."

MacDonald said donations of fresh food are a lot less common than non-perishable goods. He is thankful for a regular supply of potatoes that comes in, but otherwise fresh product makes up a small proportion of donations.

He expects that's because the food bank asks for only non-perishable donations during major food drives.

"[It's important] to get it into the proper refrigeration, and that's not always possible during a major food drive," said MacDonald.

The food bank does receive donations from gardens in Stratford and at Spring Park Church in Charlottetown of fresh produce grown specifically for it.

The food bank has a new walk-in fridge and freezer, he said, for storing food until it can be given out to people who need it.

People who do want to donate fresh food should drop it off directly at the food bank, said MacDonald, so it can get into proper storage immediately.
