Fires lead to 1-year house arrest sentence
Barry Joseph Flynn, 58, who lives at Hillsborough Hospital mental health facility, was found not guilty of arson in Charlottetown Provincial Court.
Flynn pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of damage to property.
The fires destroyed a car and caused $20,000 damage to the outbuilding of a home in East Royalty.
The Crown prosecutor told court Tuesday that jail is not an appropriate sentence for Flynn.
Following psychiatric assessment, P.E.I.'s Office of the Public Trustee has been appointed Flynn's permanent legal guardian.
Flynn will be on probation for 18 months after he serves house arrest at Hillsborough Hospital.
