Firefighters on P.E.I.'s North Shore were unable to get to a house fire in South Rustico Wednesday night.

Fire broke out in the home at about 10 p.m. as the worst blizzard of the season swept over the Island.

"Efforts to get there were very unsuccessful," said New Glasgow Fire Chief Jason Peters.

"We had the plow ahead of us along with a local loader and people with their own vehicle plows and tractors and blowers. We left around 10 o'clock and after three hours we still never got to South Rustico. The snow drifts were so big."

Firefighters reached a neighbour by telephone, who walked through the snow drifts to the woman's house and found her sheltered in her car. He took her back to his own house.

While the homeowner got out safely, the house was destroyed.

Peters said his department also responded to two medical calls and a flu fire. He said these were the worst conditions he has ever seen out on the road.
