Extortion, robbery and unlawful confinement charges laid
Summerside police say man was assaulted and forced to take out money from ATM
A 43-year-old West Prince man was arrested Monday in connection with an unusual assault and robbery on May 22 in Summerside.
He has been charged with extortion, unlawful confinement, robbery and resisting arrest.
Sgt. Joe Peters of the major crime unit of the Summerside police said police were called to a home on Notre Dame Street at around 5 a.m. last Thursday. A man told police he had been roughed up and had been forced to withdraw money from an ATM.
"They were in fact known to each other but the victim was forced to actually leave the residence and go to an ATM where he was then again forced to withdraw money for the accused," said Peters.
"Physical force was used."
Peters said the victim required treatment at the Prince County Hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.
Police found the accused Monday in the Mill River area. Peters said he tried to get away when police were making the arrest.
He appeared in court in Summerside Tuesday. Peters said the man will stay in custody until his next court appearance on June 12.
