A 47-year-old Ebenezer man drowned after slipping underwater while digging clams with his family near Stanley Bridge late Sunday afternoon.

Police identified him as Trent Jeremiah Simpson.

Some of the man's family members and bystanders pulled him from the water, but weren't able to resuscitate him.

Simpson was not a swimmer, said RCMP Const. Ben Sark.

"The depths of the water can be unpredictable. At one point, there's two feet of water, he's out clam digging and the next point you know, he could take a step and it would be over your head. The depths change," said Sark.

The water conditions at the beach were fine, with no riptides or winds that could have endangered the man, said Sark.

The drowning isn't being investigated as suspicious, said RCMP.
