The Abegweit First Nation at Scotchfort, P.E.I. has secured the services of a family doctor.
Dr. Megan Armstrong will work out of the health centre on the Scotchfort reserve one day a week. Chief Brian Francis said her services are welcome relief to many who were without proper health care services.
"Many of our members were without a family doctor and others found it difficult to get transportation to Charlottetown to see a doctor," said Francis.
"What this does now is bring professional health care to our community in the form of a family physician."
Armstrong said she worked on First Nations while training to be a doctor in Newfoundland and Labrador, and had been talking with the public health nurse working with the Abegweit band for the last couple of years.
She said many of the 450 members of Abegweit First Nation are also part of Sherwood Medical Centre practice.
