A daycare is moving into the location of the Summerside YMCA child care centre that is closing as of Dec. 20.

In October, the YMCA announced it would close its Early Years Centre and all of its children's programs in the city, citing declining enrolment and increased expenses.

That left many parents scrambling.

Wee Wonderz Learning Centre, which currently runs out of a small temporary location, is moving into the YMCA site.

Owner Peggy Dunville said she will try to take on as many kids from the YMCA as possible, but her current licence has a limit.

"I'm only allowed to take 24 children and keep my numbers the same. So we will try our very best to accommodate everyone. But full-time children will get first spaces that come up."

Close to 25 children attend the YMCA daycare. There are 12 full-time staff members for the daycare, pre- and after-school programs and summer day camps.

Dunville is calling the move a merger.

That means she will incorporate some parts of the Y's curriculum and look at adding some of their staff members as well.

Rhonda Green's children attend the YMCA daycare.

"It hasn't been easy," she said.

"If you had called around a month ago, we would have been told that we were on a waiting list. But spots opened up I guess."
